The IRS is reminding taxpayers who submitted the “Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return” (Form 4868) that October 15, 2009, is the last day to file their 2008 federal tax returns.
Notice 2009-87, issued October 1, reiterated the October 15 filing deadline for millions of taxpayers who had filed for the six-month extension. The IRS expects up to 10 million returns from those who had filed for the extension, including extensions for the “First-time Home Buyer Tax Credit” that closed at the regular April 15 filing deadline.
October 15 is also the deadline for “Special Voluntary Disclosures” of previously undisclosed offshore financial accounts.
Taxpayers serving in Iraq, Afghanistan or other combat zones and those affected by certain recent natural disasters may be allowed to file after the October 15 deadline. These taxpayers should consult with their CPAs, professional taxpayers or directly with the IRS to determine if they qualify for the later filing deadline.
